FAQ

How is the program structured? What is the balance between theory and practice?

The first and second semesters focus on the interaction between media, politics and society as well as on media development approaches. The program also includes journalism training and practical media projects.

This is a four-semester program. The first and second semesters focus on the interaction between media, politics and society as well as on media development approaches. This is supplemented by journalistic skills, media business administration and media management. The first two semesters also look at "basic" subjects such as communication and presentation skills as well as intercultural communication.
Block seminars on empirical methods, media planning and research on media usage are the focus of the third semester. Students also learn more about project management and leadership and complete a media-related research project.

In the fourth semester students write their Master's thesis and take a final, oral exam.

You can find an overview of the courses in the download section of the FAQ.

What is the balance between theory and practice?

The emphasis is definitely on theory. However, the program does include journalism training and practical media projects. Students work independently on reports for TV, online, radio and print.

The practical media courses make up approximately one quarter of the total credits. The program is therefore not comparable to a journalism traineeship or journalism studies.
