To support the media start-ups network, DW Akademie created a series of presentations focussing on relevant topics that can help people working on media viability. You can find them all here.

Presentation #1: Hate Speech and Mental Health

The number of threats and hate speech against journalists has increased significantly in recent years. This presentation exlores these issues and what is being done to combat them.

Keynote speaker: Since 2017, Ellen Wesemüller has worked for Neue Deutsche Medienmacher, an umbrella organization for journalists with a migration background. She is the project manager of "No Hate Speech" project.

Presentation #2: Metrics and KPIs

Metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs) are crucial for a successful media startup. This presentation provides interesting insights into why you should measure aspects of your start-up, what to measure and how.

Keynote speaker: Gabriel Yoran is a co-founder of Steady, a membership platform for independent publishers across Europe launched in 2017 by the Google DNI: https://steadyhq.com/en

Presentation #3: Safety for journalists 

Journalistic safety is the ability for journalists and media professionals to do their job without facing physical and psychological threats, but also digital risks. Threats range from harassment, intimidation, enforced disappearances and detention, to torture, murder and kidnapping. 

Keynote speakers: Maria Salazar Ferro, director of Emergencies Department at the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and Daniel Moßbrucker, freelance journalist and digital security trainer. 

Presentation #4: Non-violent communication (NVC) 

The concept of non-violent living was developed by Marshall Rosenberg in the 1960s. It is based on the assumption that all human beings have the capacity for compassion and empathy and that people only resort to violence or behavior harmful to others when they do not recognize more effective strategies for meeting needs. 

Keynote speaker: Thomas Stelling  is a trainer and coach specialized in NVC.

Presentation #5: Remote work 

Especially in times of Corona virus, remote work is even more relevant than ever. But while it’s widespread, it’s still a challenge for companies and remote workers alike. 

Keynote speaker: Frederik Fischer is a journalist and media entrepreneur.

Presentation #6: Virtual Consultancy 

What are the main differences between face-to-face consultancy and consultancy in a virtual space? hat are the key elements? What is the main role of a consultant? What are the differences between consultant, coach and mentor?

Keynote speakers: James Breiner who is an expert in media viability and Ross Settles is a consultant in fundraising, revenue streams, management and organizational development. 

Presentation #7: Virtual Workshops  

In this presentation we discussed virtual workshops and learned ways to create engaging virtual gatherings. We got to know ideas, best practices and resources like for example creating great openers, icebreakers and closing rituals for online sessions. 

Keynote speaker: Felix Zellner is a co-founder of the company Work Awesome and the host of "Remote Daily," a daily talkshow on Zoom and Linkedin Live.
