The war in the Middle East and the conflicts in Syria, Yemen, Sudan, Libya and other countries are intensifying the journalism crisis in the MENA region.
JOURNALISM RISE is DW Akademie’s regional strategy for countries in the Middle East and North Africa. It focuses on the future of journalism in a time of deep geopolitical tensions and changing information ecosystems, and looks at journalism’s self-image, approach to work and relationship with its audience.
Journalists worldwide face numerous challenges: how to win back the trust of media users, and particularly younger users; how to protect and assert themselves in an environment of shrinking spaces and state infringements; how to respond to rampant disinformation; and how artificial intelligence can strengthen their profession.
Journalism crisis intensifies in the MENA region
The war in the Middle East and the conflicts in Syria, Yemen, Sudan Libya and other countries have intensified the journalism crisis in the MENA region.
It is easy for political actors to play with the media, for propaganda to drown out facts, for local reporters to be personally affected by events or become the target of violent acts.
In response, DW Akademie supports journalists in the region in finding answers to pressing questions about their trade. Media professionals, educational institutions, entrepreneurs, IT experts and media users are developing solutions for sustainable journalism that faces a critical audience.
Our partner network includes community media in Morocco, media start-ups in Tunisia, Libyan fact-checkers, educational organizations in Jordan and the Palestinian territories, and local media in Lebanon.
Through consulting, knowledge transfer and international dialogue, these partners support the development of transparent, fair information and media systems in their countries.
The current crisis can also be an opportunity for journalism – if it succeeds in redefining its role, responsibility and approach to work and thus convince its audience.
