    It's time to change history

    The aim of "Cambia la Historia" is to not just to denounce structural violence against women in Mexico, El Salvador and Guatemala, but also to seek solutions through constructive journalism. The multimedia works will be published on a platform created by DW Akademie and in the independent media outlets from where the reporters collaborate.

    Dalia Souza, Jalisco (Mexico)

    Dalia is head of information at ZonaDocs, an independent media outlet in Jalisco, Mexico, that investigates forced disappearances and gender issues, among others. She coordinated the investigation "Women survivors of torture in Jalisco: The use of their bodies as a method and an end to patriarchal violence" and is producer of the programs "Rumbo Al Norte" and "Hasta Encontrarlos".

  • Fátima Escobar

    Fátima Escobar, San Salvador (El Salvador)

    Fátima is a journalist who works as a reporter for Alharaca, one of the few multimedia outlets in El Salvador with a specific agenda on gender. From 2015 to 2018, she was part of the team at the magazine Ciencia Médica of La Prensa Gráfica de El Salvador. Her journalistic work is focused on public health, gender and human rights issues.

    Daniela Rea, Mexico City (Mexico)

    In addition to being co-founder and reporter for Pie de Página, a member of the Global Investigative Journalism Network, Daniela is part of Nuevos Cronistas de Indias of Gabriel García Márquez's New Ibero-American Journalism Foundation. Her chronicles and reports are included in several books. The most recent, "La Tropa" (with Pablo Ferri), won the 2018 Javier Valdez Cárdenas Journalism Award.

    Dulce Soto, Mexico City (Mexico)

    Dulce works as a reporter and mentor at Corriente Alterna, a platform developed by the National Autonomous University of Mexico to promote journalism among new generations. In that role, she leads a team of male and female reporters in training, and accompanies and advises their investigations. From 2013 to 2020 she worked at the Reforma newspaper, where she wrote about health and gender.

    Jade Ramírez Cuevas, Jalisco (México)

    A self-taught Mexican radio broadcaster and reporter, Jade is currently the director and founder of Perimetral, a platform focused on radio journalism that portrays the problems faced by rural and indigenous people in the Pacific zone of Mexico. She has received an award from the International Biennial and from the King of Spain International Journalism Award.

    Lizbeth Hernandez, Mexico City (Mexico)

    Lizbeth is the coordinator of Kaja Negra, a digital media outlet focused on telling stories about women and the LGBTQ+ community. Since 2011, she has covered protests and other expressions of women's struggle in different parts of Mexico for media outlets such as The Washington Post in Spanish, Alharaca and Animal Político. She is also a consultant on feminist and sexual dissidence issues.

    Mely Arellano, Puebla (Mexico)

    Mely is co-founder and co-director of the LADO B, a local digital media outlet, with almost 10 years of existence and more than 20 local, national and international journalism awards. 2014 she won the "Equity and Gender" award in the Reportage category of the National Journalism Award and, in 2018, one in the Chronicle category with a text about women's resistance to the mine in Ixtacamaxtitlán.

  • Paulina A. Ríos

    Paulina Alejandra Ríos, Oaxaca (Mexico)

    Paulina has been a journalist for more than 30 years. She is the director of the Página3.mx news portal, the first independent media outlet in Oaxaca which has been active for 10 years. She was the head of social communication in several public institutions and director of Attention to Vulnerable Groups and Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse in the State Commission of Human Rights.

    Silvia Lilian Trujillo, Guatemala (Guatemala)

    Silvia is co-editor of the feminist media outlet LaCuerda, one of the few independent media in Guatemala with a gender agenda. In addition to being a sociologist, she is a professor at the Rafael Landívar University and has conducted research for several international organizations, including UNDP, UNFPA, UNICEF and ILO. She specializes in communication and gender, as well as women's rights.

    Women support each other

    Journalists and photojournalists Marlene Martínez (Lado B), María Ruíz (Pie de Página), Isabel Briseño (Pie de Página), Mariana Mora (Zona Docs), Diana Manzo (Página 3) and Mahé Élipe (Kaja Negra) contribute with visual and narrative proposals to the development of their colleagues' projects, each of them linked to an independent media outlet in the region.

Campus AMI: Navigating the internet with media literacy

Everyone uses it, but only a few know their way around the internet and social media. The "Campus AMI" educational format provides digital education and teaches media skills in Central America. 

Local and community media in a pandemic: Technological responses and challenges in Latin America and Africa

The pandemic has weakened local and community media right when their reporting was most needed. However, many have turned this challenge into an opportunity. DW Akademie draws some of the lessons learned by our partners.

Latin America: Indigenous community reporters on joining forces and the COVID-19 crisis 

13 indigenous community reporters from DW Akademie’s partner organizations participated in media conferences in Latin America. They told us how this has influenced their work and how they are adapting to the pandemic.

Reconciliation in post-civil war Guatemala – a journey into the past

Hundreds of thousands of people were murdered in Guatemala during the 36-year civil war that ended in 1996. Just recently, university students met living witnesses of that era as part of a DW Akademie project.
