Why did you choose to become part of the IMS program?
After working in content production for different media outlets, I decided to give my career a new direction, exploring the intersection of social change, media and communications. When I discovered the IMS program and reviewed its curriculum, I realized it was the perfect opportunity for me. The program would allow me to explore topics I am interested in, such as media literacy, communication for development, solution journalism and communication science. It would also give me the chance to study under the guidance of DW’s expertise and resources, alongside colleagues from diverse parts of the world, and that solidified my decision to apply.

Which career path have you taken since graduating from the program?
After the IMS and my time in Germany, I returned to Colombia with a strong commitment to pursue career opportunities that leverage media tools and storytelling to support the mission of organizations dedicated to fostering social change, empowering communities and promoting social development. Since completing the program, I have focused on building a career that aligns with these values and aspirations.

Which of the skills that you acquired in the program are you applying to your work?
One of the most valuable takeaways from the IMS program is the fresh perspective it provides and the ability to view situations from different angles, enabling me to effectively connect the dots. These skills have become indispensable in my daily work. No matter which project or story I am working on, I have a set of tools and principles that guide me through challenges and support me in decision-making processes.

What were some of the other highlights for you?
It gave me the opportunity to broaden my perspective on the diverse uses of media. Through the various modules, media practice and project work, I gained both theoretical knowledge and practical skills that deepened my understanding of the pivotal role media plays in today's society. The program also encouraged me to reflect on the role I aspire to play as a media practitioner.

Do you have any advice for future IMS students and graduates?
If you decide to take part in the IMS program, start with an open mind. Be curious both inside and outside the classroom, exploring the opportunities that the academic and professional network in Bonn can offer you. Be willing to challenge yourself and dive into new topics.
