Beyond Borders: A how-to for covering migration in Asia

Migration and forced displacement are among the most pressing issues in Asia today, yet media coverage often struggles to capture the complexity of these topics. Reports frequently focus on challenges and crises, while overlooking the voices of those most affected or the benefits migration can bring. This can reinforce stereotypes and deepen divisions between host communities and displaced populations.
To address this, DW Akademie has developed the Beyond Borders Toolkit, a practical resource for journalists reporting on migration and forced displacement in Asia. Written by journalists for journalists, the toolkit is a hands-on approach improving coverage and fostering understanding, social cohesion and peace.
The toolkit provides:
- Background and context: Key concepts, historical perspectives and trends in migration across Asia.
- Reporting essentials: Guidelines for research, interviews, and ethical practices, including conflict-sensitive journalism and participatory approaches.
- Storytelling techniques: Tips for crafting compelling narratives, using sensitive language, and integrating multimedia elements without reinforcing stereotypes.
- Safety and well-being: Advice on working in hostile environments, protecting sources, and maintaining mental health.
- Legal frameworks and resources: Information on international and regional laws, as well as links to organizations and networks that support journalists.
What makes this toolkit unique is its Asian perspective. While covering global standards and frameworks, it includes examples and case studies relevant to the region, helping journalists navigate local contexts and challenges.
The Beyond Borders Toolkit is designed to be practical and easy to use. It includes checklists, best practices and links to resources. Whether you are reporting from the field or working under tight newsroom deadlines, this toolkit can support you in producing accurate, balanced and impactful stories. See below to download the toolkit.
