Which English language tests and certificates are recognized? How can I submit proof?

Proof of English language skills is required: Usually in the form of a test at a recognized institution. Native speakers of English and graduates of university programs held entirely in English can also apply.

Due to the study orientation, proof of English language skills is required: Usually in the form of a test in the home country at a recognized institution. This does not apply to native speakers and applicants who have already completed their studies in English. The required language level is "C1", in accordance with the "Common European Framework". An overview of recognized language testsand the required language level can be found on the Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg's website.

Required CEFR level: C1

  • Cambridge English Qualifications: C1 Advanced
  • IELTS Academic / IELTS Online: ≥ 7.0
  • TOEFL iBT / TOEFL iBT Home Edition*: ≥ 95
  • PTE Academic / PTE Academic Online: ≥ 76
  • Oxford Test of English (OTE): ≥ 141

How can I submit proof of my language skills?

You can upload the certificate to the online application portal yourself or have the language institute transmit the results to us. If you have taken the English TOEFL test, please provide the ETS with our institute's number (7977).

Please note that the reading and writing modules in the General IELTS exam are not designed to test the full range of language skills required for academic purposes. The listening and speaking sections are identical but reading and writing differ. Therefore, applicants must take the Academic IELTS exam.

I studied at an English university. Is this sufficient proof of my language skills?

Yes, but only if you completed your entire degree in English itself. Semesters spent abroad do not count.

If you have completed your previous university degree in English, you should submit written official confirmation that English was the medium of instruction as proof of your English language skills.

How can I submit proof of my language skills?

If English is your native language, proof of your English proficiency in the form of a language certificate is not necessary. You should have completed an academic degree in English. Please follow the link to find out how to submit that as proof of your language skills.
