Discussion paper: "Beyond blended learning"

Today, trainers and project managers are faced with a complex set of decisions for every workshop, among them: Online or face-to-face? Both can be complemented with e-learning formats. They too have gained significant popularity during the pandemic — especially in combination with synchronous formats.
Together with our partners, we at DW Akademie have combined various training formats in many ways in recent years — from mobile only, with and without a working internet connection, to five-hour interactive online meetings with blended learning elements.

As these hybrid formats develop, now is the time to share experiences and consider ways forward from here. With this discussion paper we want to start a conversation on developing competencies in media development — and the best ways for doing so. What makes competence-based training successful, in DW Akademie’s view? What formats are available? When should they be applied, and how?
After all, media development is facing a threefold challenge when it comes to designing trainings:
- How can we best reach our target groups?
- Which formats best enable participants to develop new competencies?
- How can we use our resources most efficiently?
The short answer to all three questions is: It depends. This discussion paper will assess our experiences in different settings.
