Aufruf: mehr europäische Unterstützung für freie Medien

In vielen Ländern wirkt sich die Entscheidung der US-Regierung, die Entwicklungszusammenarbeit einzufrieren, unmittelbar auf unabhängige Medien aus.

Deshalb fordern wir – eine Koalition von Medienorganisationen, die sich für die Freiheit der Medien, die Sicherheit von Medienschaffenden und das Recht aller Menschen auf Zugang zu unvoreingenommenen und faktenbasierten Informationen einsetzen – die Europäische Union und die europäischen Staaten auf, ihre Unterstützung für unabhängige Medien weltweit zu verstärken.

Ohne eine solide finanzielle und politische Unterstützung ist keineswegs sicher, ob unabhängige, im Interesse der Allgemeinheit arbeitende Medien die aktuell drohende Krise überstehen werden.

Verlässliche Informationen retten Leben. Sie fördern die Rechenschaft staatlichen Handelns und befähigen Menschen, fundierte Entscheidungen zu treffen.

Fallen verlässliche Information weg, betrifft das die ganze Welt, nicht nur Menschen in ärmeren Ländern. Wo zuverlässige, unabhängige Medien geschwächt werden, füllen Propaganda und eigennützige Interessen unweigerlich die Lücke.

Es besteht aktuell die Gefahr, dass unabhängige Medien massenhaft zum Schweigen gebracht werden. Es drohen immense soziale Auswirkungen und neue Gefahren für die globale Entwicklungsagenda und den internationalen Frieden.

Freie, pluralistische und zuverlässige Medien von öffentlichem Interesse sind für demokratisches Zusammenleben und den menschlichen Fortschritt unverzichtbar. Ihre umfassende europäische Unterstützung ist jetzt so wichtig wie nie!

Initiiert von folgenden europäischen Medienentwicklungsorganisationen:

CFI (Frankreich), DW Akademie (Deutschland), Fondation Hirondelle (Schweiz) und International Media Support (Dänemark).

N.B.
